By any chance, did you use the same SSID for this new network? If you do that, then most likely your devices are still trying to connect to the old network. For example, when I had this setup, I named the primary wifi as “My-Wifi” and the extended wifi as “My-Wifi-Extended”.

If you want the same, then unfortunately it is not possible unless you go for a mesh networking system.
